The Impact of Screen Time

Excessive screen time can significantly impact an individual’s physical and mental well-being. Prolonged exposure to screens, especially without breaks, can lead to eye strain, disrupted sleep patterns due to blue light exposure, and a sedentary lifestyle that increases the risk of obesity and related health issues. Mentally, too much screen time—particularly on social media can contribute to increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and social isolation.

It may also impair attention span and cognitive development, especially in children and adolescents. Maintaining a healthy balance by setting screen time limits and engaging in offline activities is essential for overall health and well-being.

Physical and Mental Impacts:

  • Cardiovascular system

  • Vision

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Increased mental health difficulties

    • stress/anxiety

    • depression/suicidal ideation

Spending too much time on screens can weaken the brain’s reward system, especially in children who frequently use electronic devices. Playing video games releases large amounts of dopamine, a chemical that creates feelings of pleasure. When these reward pathways are overstimulated, they become less sensitive, so more and more stimulation is needed to experience the same enjoyment. Since dopamine is also crucial for focus and motivation, even small changes in its sensitivity can have a significant impact on a child’s mood, attention, and overall functioning.
